Gas leak closes portion of South Main Street/US 1A

UPDATE: The gas leak along the 700 block of South Main Street/US 1A has been capped.

All roads have reopened. However, the portion of South Main Street/US 1A from East Holding Avenue to West Holding Avenue has been reduced to one lane with intermittent two-way traffic.

Residents in the vicinity of the leak who were evacuated have been allowed to return to their homes.

 

The following information was distributed today at 11:59 am

 

Emergency personnel are on the scene of a ruptured gas line along the 700 block of South Main Street/US 1A. As a result, Wake Forest Police have closed the following roads:

  • South Main Street/US 1A, from Dr. Calvin Jones Highway/NC 98 Bypass to Elm Avenue

  • East Holding Avenue, from South White Street to South Main Street/US 1A

Motorists should avoid these areas and choose alternate routes.

Officials are monitoring the affected area for safety considerations. The Wake Forest Fire Department is evacuating several residents in the vicinity of the leak.

PSNC repair crews have been contacted and will work to seal off the leak. There is no timetable on when the leak will be capped.
